「大津波警報が出ると、漁港につないだ船にすぐ飛び乗って、沖に出したんだ。約１００そうが、沖に逃げた」。係留したままでは、津波に巻き込まれてしまうからです。　

　　津波の到達までは時間があり、４キロ先に至ったそうです。そこで津波をやり過ごそうと待ちました。大したことはあるまい、と。しかし。

　　「５００メートルほど先に津波が見えた。たまげたよ。三角のとがった山みたいな、壁みたいな波で、７～８メートル、いやもっとあったろうか。そのままじゃ、のみこまれそうだった」
　　沖合で船乗りたちがそれぞれ瞬時に決意したのは、真っ正面から「波を乗り越えよう」ということでした。
　　「大津波に向かって、船を走らせたんだ。だけど、全速で突っ切ると、波の上で、ぼーんとはね飛ばされちまう。　だがら、波の一番てっぺんで減速して、うまく乗り切らなきゃならない。命がけだったよ」

　　そして、まるで船の山登りのように波の壁を乗り切り、「越えたなぁ」と、ほっとしたのも束の間でした。
　　「そうしたら、同じくらいの距離を置いて、また壁のような第２波が見えたんだ」。　覚悟を決めて、もう１度挑んだそうです。
　　「それを越えたと思ったら、またその次の壁がやってきた」「津波と津波の間隔がすごく短いものもあった。全部で６つか７つ、越えたろうか。気がついたら、１５キロ沖まで逃げていたんだ」
　
　　大津波との闘いは日があるうちに終わりましたが、いろんな方向から大きな引き波が次々とやって来て、「（宮城県）亘理町の方からも来た」。浜という浜の集落をなめつくした「帰り波」だとは、海の男たちにもまだ分かりませんでした。

　　「漁業無線で陸の状況を聞いたら、『警報がまだ発令中だから、収まるまでそこにいろ』という。仕方なく、海の上で一晩を明かしたよ。船に食料の用意もなく、急に腹が減って、どうしようもなかった」
　　松川浦漁港への帰りは翌日の昼前。途中の沖合では、「ゴミが流れてたまる潮目に、ありとあらゆるがれきが集まっていた」。　もはや、陸（おか）の惨状は疑いようのないものでした。　「ぶつかると危ないので、慎重に避けながら進んだんだ。誰かいないか、助けられないか、と思って、目を皿のようにして探した。けれど、がれきの間から手を振る人もなかったな」。
