"小学校の国語の教科書に、「おみやげ」という作品が載っていた。

宇宙人が地球に来訪、自身の高度な文明を伝えようとする。
まだ未開な地球人では、この技術を誤用悪用しかねない、そう考えた宇宙人は、地球人がしかるべき程度の文明に到達したときに開けられるよう、特殊な合金を使ったカプセルにノウハウを封じ、地球人へのお土産とした。
幾年月が流れたある日、カプセルの置いてある砂漠で核実験が行われる。
カプセルは跡形もなく消滅する。
―という話だ。

この「おみやげ」を生徒に朗読させた後、女教師が問う。
「皆さんはこの話を読んでどう思いましたか？」と。
「核兵器はいけないと思いましたー」
「人間は戦争の道具ばかり発達させていけないと思いまーす」
バカのひとつ覚えな答えを次々に発する級友たち。目を細める女教師。
やがて俺の番が来た。

「僕は星新一の作品は全て読みましたが、彼はエッセイでこう言っていました―
『自分は単なる流行作家で、それ以上でもそれ以下でもない。にもかかわらず、変に道徳的なメッセージなどを深読みされるのは大変心外』―と。
なので、この『おみやげ』という作品を安直に『戦争反対』と読むのは、作者の意図を大きく捻じ曲げることに他ならないと思います」

俺の目の前で、バリバリの日教組である駅弁卒の女教師が大きく手を振りかぶった。"
